Short Video Contest Amongst Undergraduate Students on Business And Human Rights, 2024

A short video contest on the theme of Business and Human Rights in Southeast Asia was organised amongst undergraduate students enrolled in Southeast Asian tertiary academic institutions, including vocational colleges. The video competition was organised in collaboration with ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Representatives of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand and the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University.  

The contest called upon interested students to create a video of 3-5 minutes in duration highlighting the relationships between business and human rights, addressing one or more of the following questions:

• The impact of business on human rights
• Why should businesses respect human rights?
• How can businesses prioritise human rights in their operations?

We received 14 submissions from different ASEAN countries: Cambodia (1); Philippines (4); Indonesia (2); Malaysia (1); Myanmar (5); and Thailand (1). While the students in their submissions generally focused on the relationship between business and human rights,  some students focused on specific themes such as child labour, the impact of mining activities on livelihoods and the environment and discrimination against people with different sexual orientations in hiring practices. 8 videos were shortlisted for expert review and popular voting.

The winners of the competition were:

1st Prize Winner: Prince Loyd Cabalida Besorio, 4th-year student of Engineering, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology,, Philippines. 

2nd Prize Winner: Adthie Chard A/L Boon, 2nd-year student, School of Computing, University Utara Malaysia, Malaysia 

3rd Prize Winner: Patchariya Mosikarat, 1st-year student of Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism Management, Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand 

Popular Vote Winner: Mark Louise Nofiez Borja and Rhea Balaysoche, 3rd-year students, Division of Social Science, University of the Philippines Tacloban, Philippines. 

Some of the winners joined online to discuss their video during the Conference on Business and Human Rights, organised as part of the Regional Network Meeting, held in Bangkok on 20th October 2023.
